Boneheaded Manuever ever?

I never thought I’d see this day which the NFL admitted to a congressional committee that playing football is linked to CTE.

This move was the all-time blunder because it will be the end of football as we all know it. Parents will keep their kids away from the sport. It will be regulated just like boxing is. Keep government out of sports unless an existing law is repeatedly being breached. Sports is America’s last remaining bastion of freedom. Let’s fight to keep it that way for good.

Back to the NFL. I’m sure NFL for the witness at the congressional hearing stands for Not for Long. That relates to his job. Or the NFL stands for Non-Functioning Losers.

Chargers LA Bound

An agreement was reached to have the San Diego Chargers move to Los Angeles and share a stadium with the Rams.

Where does this leave the Oakland Raiders? They were denied the Los Angeles bid. They are currently trying to get a stadium in San Antonio or in Las Vegas. It’s going to be interesting where they end up. Could it be Oakland? San Antonio? San Diego? Las Vegas?

It will be intriguing.

NFL in Los Angeles

As you have all heard, the St. Louis Rams have relocated to Los Angeles. They will actually play at the Coliseum for a couple of seasons before playing in Inglewood, CA when their new stadium gets built.

Let’s be honest; the Rams should not have left LA. Granted, they won SB 34 in 1999, but St. Louis does not seem to be a football city. LA was a bargaining chip for NFL owners to use to get better stadium deals for themselves, which is why it took 21 years for the league to cave in to various requests to have pro football in Los Angeles.

Outlook: The survival of the NFL in LA depends on two things; 1, Winning. If a team there does not win, the fans can just flock to one of countless beaches or ski slopes in the San Bernardino Mountains. No one here wants to see a bad team. 2...

Concussions

In the past nine years during Commissioner Roger Goodell’s tenure, the impacts of head injuries, most notably concussions, has been brought to light. There was a lawsuit, class-action, against the NFL in which a settlement was reached. People have had myriad mental health conditions as a result of playing football for several years, growing up, in college, and/or in the pros. In recent years the NFL, NCAA, and high school and below have made strides to make the game safer. But it is not enough. To make the game truly safe, there has to be changes in the development of foorball players and technique used to tackle and block.

Let’s start with Pop Warner football, Head injuries at a very young age in a persons life can adversely affect their cognitive development in future years...

MidSeason Report Cards

This season has been surprising for myriad reasons. Injuries have taken its toll on a lot of teams, while some teams have been fortunate in this regard. Needless to say, each grade on my report card reflects the performance to expectation ratio, that is, if your team is playing better than expected, you’ll get a B or an A; worse than expected, D or F. So without further ado. Here is my report card, offense and defense, and total grade.

Aaron Hernandez Convicted of 1st-degree murder

Now that former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez has been convicted and sentenced to life in prison with no shot at parole, I’m going to give you my thoughts on the case. They are:

1. Why did the defense only call three witnesses? Why didn’t they put forth a better effort? Right now no one knows, but the prosecution, even with circumstantial evidence, still managed to get a jury of twelve to convict Mr. Hernandez of first-degree homicide.

2. Did the jury know about the other case, the double-homicide in 2012? If so, they might have been biased, therefore depriving Mr. Hernandez of a fair trial.

I expect at some point in the future that there will be a retrial or even a overturning of the verdict because of these facts.

NFL ’14: Season Preview

Top Ten predictions for the 2014 season:

10. Look for the Oakland Raiders to make a serious run at the postseason this year. They’ve bought in an influx of talent via free agency, notably Lamarr Woodley, and the draft, notably (Silver and (Khalil)) Mack.

9. The Chargers won’t reach the playoffs this year. Phillip Rivers and Antonio Gates are getting older and, outside of Eric Weddle, they are mediocre at best and a two-win team at worst.

8. Look for Rex Ryan to lead the Jets to the second round of the playoffs and win Coach of the Year by shocking the world and upsetting the Patriots for the AFC East title. Hey, Tom Brady; be blessed you have a good wife to go home to each night.

7. Panthers will be lucky to win more than four games...

NFL Free Agency

On March 12 of every calendar year in the NFL, teams go out and pursue players that, effective the end of the previous season, now are no longer under contract with the team they last played for. Some teams, like the Oakland Raiders in this year’s case, have a ton of salary cap space whereas a number of teams have little to no cap room due to myriad reasons. Some of which include a team cutting a player with guaranteed money left on his contract; the term “dead money” has become prevalent in analyzing money paid out to released players...
