One and Done… or is it?

College basketball is a joke. I know the NBA has the rule a player can’t go pro until he is one year removed from high school, but this rule is causing college athletic programs to inadvertently commit myriad NCAA violations. An example is O.J. Mayo, formerly of the University of Southern California. He didn’t want to be in school and him being there caused USC to commit a violation. If Mayo had been permitted to go pro out of high school, it would’ve saved both him and USC a ton of issues.

I think players should have at least an Associate’s Degree to be in the NBA. It gives them options. What if a player suffers a catastrophic injury a month or so into his career and can no longer play at all? An educated person has a safety net to fall in...

Boneheaded Manuever ever?

I never thought I’d see this day which the NFL admitted to a congressional committee that playing football is linked to CTE.

This move was the all-time blunder because it will be the end of football as we all know it. Parents will keep their kids away from the sport. It will be regulated just like boxing is. Keep government out of sports unless an existing law is repeatedly being breached. Sports is America’s last remaining bastion of freedom. Let’s fight to keep it that way for good.

Back to the NFL. I’m sure NFL for the witness at the congressional hearing stands for Not for Long. That relates to his job. Or the NFL stands for Non-Functioning Losers.

Quality Issues of NBA play

The debate has begun; do we try to make the NBA watchable or do we just start fining players for appearing on Shaqtin’ A Fool? I’d say fine them the price of a sandwich and a beverage at Subway. Its purpose is to get players to step their game up.

We have guys doing things like traveling long distances, I.e. seven or more steps without dribbling, to airballing free throws, to (the worst offense) not playing defense at all. I’m glad Shaqtin’ exists because it can motivate players to be more alert.

My choice for Shaqtin’ MVP: Garlon Green, of some team in Germany. Look him up on YouTube. He dunked the ball in his own basket.

Anyway, the NBA right now is sometimes hard to watch because while offenses are still flashy, I have not heard of a team having a good defense because defense has appare...

Super Bowl Memories from my couch

Super Bowl Sunday. No better holiday (yes, it should be considered a holiday and Monday after should be a paid day off work to get over the hangovers) than comraderie with friends and family, stuffing our faces with all kinds of food, from pizza to chips, hamburgers to wings, soda to alcoholic beverages.

Tips for a successful Super Bowl party:

1) Make sure there are a barbecue grill and plenty of charcoal. Gas grills are not safe and the taste isn’t as good

2) Plenty of beverages. Bring as many beverages as you want, but bring only those that you know your buddies will drink and that they last the whole game. If you’re under 21, DO NOT USE OR BRING ALCOHOL TO THE PARTY!

3) If the game is a blowout, don’t turn off the screen. A fan of the team ahead could be enjoying every minute of it...

Pick-up sports, story and benefits of

It was a cold evening in the California Desert in 2002. Your humble writer, me, was playing basketball in the park was beginning the best years of his life. As a college student, I couldn’t play more than a few games of 21 per night, because I had to grab the bus home and be ready for class the next day.

During each game, I was playing the perimeter very well, passing and shooting, as well as driving by defenders. Someone who was very knowledgeable about basketball would come by and give me advice on developing a hook shot, because I was taller than all of my opponents and teammates. I struggled to be effective with the hook shot, so I continued to play my style...

Chargers LA Bound

An agreement was reached to have the San Diego Chargers move to Los Angeles and share a stadium with the Rams.

Where does this leave the Oakland Raiders? They were denied the Los Angeles bid. They are currently trying to get a stadium in San Antonio or in Las Vegas. It’s going to be interesting where they end up. Could it be Oakland? San Antonio? San Diego? Las Vegas?

It will be intriguing.

Amateur Sports

In markets that don’t have a professional sports team, a good percentage of athletes train through blood, sweat, and tears to reach the pros. In high school, (or before) athletes are taught teamwork and sacrifice to improve their character, while also developing their in-game skills.

In college, if they choose to go there, an athlete is expected to polish their talents, mentally and physically, and to begin being role models for younger athletes. They aren’t being paid now, but when they go pro, they will reap the benefits of what they sowed.

I would encourage every fan of a sport to attend amateur events in their community to see the future of pro sports. A lot of athletes you’d see in the amateur events could be at the next pro event you attend...

NFL in Los Angeles

As you have all heard, the St. Louis Rams have relocated to Los Angeles. They will actually play at the Coliseum for a couple of seasons before playing in Inglewood, CA when their new stadium gets built.

Let’s be honest; the Rams should not have left LA. Granted, they won SB 34 in 1999, but St. Louis does not seem to be a football city. LA was a bargaining chip for NFL owners to use to get better stadium deals for themselves, which is why it took 21 years for the league to cave in to various requests to have pro football in Los Angeles.

Outlook: The survival of the NFL in LA depends on two things; 1, Winning. If a team there does not win, the fans can just flock to one of countless beaches or ski slopes in the San Bernardino Mountains. No one here wants to see a bad team. 2...

Concussions

In the past nine years during Commissioner Roger Goodell’s tenure, the impacts of head injuries, most notably concussions, has been brought to light. There was a lawsuit, class-action, against the NFL in which a settlement was reached. People have had myriad mental health conditions as a result of playing football for several years, growing up, in college, and/or in the pros. In recent years the NFL, NCAA, and high school and below have made strides to make the game safer. But it is not enough. To make the game truly safe, there has to be changes in the development of foorball players and technique used to tackle and block.

Let’s start with Pop Warner football, Head injuries at a very young age in a persons life can adversely affect their cognitive development in future years...

The Fall of a Dynasty?

Throughout the course of history, nations rose and fell. The same rings true with sports franchises. In the case of the Los Angeles Lakers, they have had success their entire time in LA. From 1979 through 2012-13 they had missed the postseason only twice.

In the fall of 2013, the team fell on rough times and still has not recovered. Since then they missed the playoffs twice and this season does not look like much of an improvement, since many expect the Lakers’ to miss the playoffs for the third straight season.

The link to five of those championships, Kobe Bryant, is likely in his final season of his career and he has been resting more than playing, so the torch needs to be passed. This player could lead the Lakers’ back to the promised land.

Is this player on the roster? DeAngelo Russell...
